Northern Virginia's Occoquan Reservoir is challenged to meet a growing demand for drinking water to serve over one million people by being the largest reservoir system in the U. S. and providing a safe drinking water supply through the use of reclaimed sewage wastewater. This most urbanized drinkingshed in the U.S. supports over 500 dams on its river and tributaries that flow through farms, suburbs and shopping centers. Its polluted water is used for drinking, waste disposal, irrigation, fishing, boating, swimming, and nature-watching. Partially funded by grants through the Northern Virginia Regional Commission.
